The economy in Aroostook County in Maine depends on the success of the potato farming industry. Thanks to the team of clever farmers who started the company in Mars Hill, in the heart of Aroostook County, the future of Maine potatoes now looks better than ever. Maine has been growing potatoes longer than any other state in the union. Maine potatoes are great tasting potatoes because of rich soil and a favorable climate with long warm days and cool nights. Today Maine grows approximately 65,000 acres of potatoes, primarily in Aroostook County. But this was not the case several years ago when the demand for fresh potatoes declined.

“In the mid 1990s, we watched the kids moving away because there were fewer jobs," says Rodney McCrum, a fourth generation farmer. “We felt that if we didn’t make a change there wouldn’t be any potato farming in Maine in the future.”

Rodney McCrum, Francis Fitzpatrick, and a small group of local farmers decided the time was right to develop a line of fresh-cut potato products that would meet the growing demand for fresh, prepared produce. They teamed up with one of the world’s leading food processing engineering and design companies to develop proprietary production technology. McCrum’s original building, in Mars Hill, was converted into the country’s most up-to-date, ecologically sensitive processing facility.
